Hi there! My name is MoJo. I am a South African artist and illustrator living and creating in the beautiful city of Johannesburg. I have a passion for animals of all sorts and love creating quirky, humorous, whimsical anthropomorphic art.

The Idea of MoJo

Before I became MoJo, I was just Jo, an art teacher who had lost the magic of what was really important to me. After seeing many retired teachers go off without any purpose, I felt that I had to change my narrative long before retirement age. So I put my big girl panties on and decided to find the magic, my Mojo! I resigned with immediate effect and applied for an art residency in Japan, my dream destination! Little did I know, that the power of positive thought would land me with an acceptance letter only 2 days later. And then my journey began and hasn’t stopped. Not without ups and downs as life is known to throw curveballs. But I persisted in what I believed in, to touch the world with humor and whimsy. My favorite quote reads “We must remain whimsical to survive the horrors of this world“.

The relationship between man and animal is deeply rooted in my work. I feel passionately about endangered species as well as the dynamic between humans and their pets. “Without anthropomorphizing our non-human relations, we can acknowledge that animals share many human characteristics. They have emotional lives, experience love and fear, and possess their own integrity…They play and are curious about the world. They develop loyalties and display altruism. To me, animals have all the traits indicative of soul“ - excerpt taken from ‘The Soul of Animals’ by Gary A. Kawasaki.

If you feel passionate about animals, have a sense of humor and your soul sings, then this is the page for you.
